Queensland two biggest electricity distribution companies are both seeking new apprentices to join their operations, with roles commencing in early 2019.

Ergon and Energex are seeking apprentices to fill around 100 positions at 47 locations across the state, including 18 new roles in Central Queensland according to Mr. Jeff Green, Operational support general manager. 8 of these positions will be based in Rockhampton, three in Gladstone, while Biloela, Blackwater, Clermont, Middlemount, Moura, Springsure and Yeppoon each have only a single position on offer.

Mr Green says they will be offering the new apprenticeships to locals to give them the opportunity to remain close to home, family and friends throughout their training. He also mentioned that they’re aiming for a more diverse work place and will be hiring women and indigenous staff for some of these positions, no matter what your background, everyone is encouraged to apply. Jeff Green also acknowledged that they will be offering positions to mate aged apprentices, as well as school leavers.

“the apprenticeship intake demonstrated Ergon and Energex’s commitment to ensuring they had the front-line staff required now and into the future to deliver a safe and reliable electricity supply to customers.” he said.

“The importance of having a highly trained workforce is evident from our response to natural disasters right across the state, when hundreds of crews work to restore power to communities impacted by cyclones, storms and floods”

The specific roles vary from location to location however they include an electronics and communications technician, distribution linesperson, transmission linesperson, cable jointer, mechanical trade (diesel fitter) and electrician among others.

The vast majority of Electrical industry workers started out in an apprenticeship just like those offered by Ergon and Energex, so it’s a great place to begin a career if you’re looking at working with power, and there’s also some good opportunities to return to the work force for mature aged applicants.

And just take a look at the first year earnings of an Energex or Ergon apprentice:

  • Under 21 years of age: $29,289 per annum + superannuation
  • 21 & over years of age: $58,880 per annum + superannuation
